This is true.
On November 30 last year, a four-year-old girl snuck into her mother's bedroom and wondered why she wouldn't wake up.
The youngster jumped on her mum, jumped and jumped, but couldn't raise her, so she woke up her 11-year-old brother to see if he could help.
The brother realised, even at that age, that his mother was dead.
He told the neighbour. The neighbour rang the dead mum's best friend. The best friend took the kids in because the dad(s) were variously useless.
She'd lost her best friend. She'd taken on two kids on top on her own four, two of whom are twins, one of which has cancer.
The state?
"You made a private arrangement. We have no statutory obligation to provide finance for those children."
