..its origins are claimed to be in a song from the 1880s about a guy called reilly/riley who ruminated on what he would do if he struck it rich. It was deemed to have been bought into public usage a bit later in the early 1900s where the phrase 'life of reilly' was first used in a song, comparing the singer to living the same life.
there is also speculation that it was bought into prominence from US soldiers writing back to describe the apparent calmness of the opposition - that they must be living the life of reilly to be so calm in the face of impending dangers.

The song contained lyrics such as "a hundred a day would be my pay", and other comedic speculation about what "Mr. Reilly" would do if he were to become wealthy. The earliest recorded citation for "life of Reilly", however, is in 1919, where the "life of Reilly" is referred to in another song, "...but I'm living the life of Reilly just the same..."
